The modifying phrase 研究して  います becomes 研究して  いる

大木道男は  学者です。	-	Michio Oki is a scholar.
その 学者は  けいざいを  研究して  います。	-	He is doing research in (the field of) economics.
大木道男は けいざいを 研究して いる  学者です。	-	Michio Oki is a scholar who is doing research in (the field of) economics.
Examples:
あそこで コーヒーを のんで いる 人は わたしの 友だちです。	-	The person who is drinking coffee over there is my friend.
ホールで まって いる人はだれですか。	-	Who is the man waiting in the hall?
あの女の人は、この会社ではたらいて いる社員です。	-	She is an employee of this company.
